A Duluth hospital offering a wide range of healthcare services, Essentia Health has deployed new surgical robots to provide minimally-invasive surgeries quickly, reducing the time patients take under anesthesia as well as recovery, according to a Senior Operations Supervisor for Surgery, Stacy Lund.

Fox21 News reported that the company held a “Meet the Robots” last Tuesday and invited the community to have a first-hand interaction with the state-of-the-art equipment. Four different types of robots were on display, with surgeons asking questions about the AI-powered medical procedure assistants.

The four robotic surgical tools displayed included the Da Vinci, the Monarch, the Mako, and the Mazor systems. These robotic systems are specially designed to help surgeons undertake special surgeries, including knee replacements, bone cutting and grafting, lung diagnosis and Cardiothoracic surgeries with high precision.

Robotic Assistants to Benefit Both Physicians and Patients

Although the robots are highly advanced, Essentia Health leaders affirmed that they could not be used without surgeons’ operations. As such, they cannot replace surgeon but only make their work easier.

According to Lund, the new robotic systems not only simplify the work of healthcare professionals but also deliver a major benefit to patients by reducing the turn-around time from three days to about a day. This minimizes the time a patient has to take under anesthesia and reduces the recovery period.

Unlike traditional surgery procedures that can often result in large incisions on patients’ bodies, the use of robots allows surgeons to pinpoint what should be done within millimeters of accuracy.

The use of robotic systems to simplify complex procedures is rapidly gaining traction amid the immense potential presented by artificial intelligence. With AI-powered systems, healthcare professionals can undertake complex tasks within a short time with high accuracy, alleviating delays and improving patient outcomes.
