With the use of telehealth, the gap in caregiving for pediatric patients can be tackled

Health and Wellness Informatics News

Dr. Brian D’Anza, the medical director of telehealth, will talk about the new emergency room for the pediatric department in telehealth.

Pediatric patients who require emergency care can feel the need for unique equipment. As per the situations, they might require specialized practitioners and the proper resources that many emergency departments do not have.

The reality is, only about 10% of EDs in the USA have a department for pediatric patients. Most of the hospitals report that they lack the resources necessary to treat the common emergency conditions. Various conditions like asthma exacerbation, acute appendicitis, and bronchitis require urgent care.

It has coupled with the fact that roughly 20% of all ED visits are for children. Thus the pediatric patients in the rural areas must transfer to a better facility. The University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, knows this problem very well.

Dr. Brian said they are a large academic health system. But they also have a large network dedicated to the EDs and the urgent care centers. When they looked at the data, they found that they did get frequent transfers from these sites to the central pediatric ED. The reason behind it is that they see the pediatric trained emergency room provided there.

These transfers are not only time-consuming but also scary for families. At the same time, it causes unnecessary costs for healthcare. Thus he and his team have decided to set up a healthcare program to connect the network of EDs. It will help to bring the pediatric specialists under one system to avoid the transfers of the patients.

With the help of telehealthcare, they can make a bigger difference in healthcare. Though it is virtual, it can be very helpful. A sphere will be a real person on the other end.

The idea is not to hook them with the chatbot. But it will boost the trust factor and will help them to offer more compassionate care. Thus they have felt that synchronous video interactions can be necessary for such care.

The project started in April of 2020. It has used some of the technologies that the health system is already having in its telehealth programs. This program is a success.
