A new study has shown how using technology to centralize patient-generated health data build pressure on clinicians. That often causes technostress among clinicians and resulting in burnout.
A new article published by the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association showed the vicious impact of electronic usage for data collection. It found the electronic health record-integrated patient-generated health data tends to cause clinician burnout.
Technology like wearables, remote monitoring devices, and smartphone apps collects health-oriented patient information rapidly. That then gets shared in turn with the healthcare providers. The article focuses on two types of health data components.
One is mobile health, while the other is patient-reported outcomes through self-filled questionnaires. A PhD student of Northwestern University, Jiancheng Ye, said this electronic health records, secure messaging, and patient portals like facilities actively engaged many patients with their HCPs.
However, increasing connections with EHR-integrated patient-generated health data can cause clinician burnout. Ye on this says, “Clinician burnout is not only a syndrome of emotional exhaustion but also a type of cynicism about job responsibilities.”
Targeting one of the three main factors for burnout, technostress surrounds a range of concerns. That includes complexities and insecurity of new tools. For which physicians have to work harder, faster and relearn technical skills that can unsettle them.
Secondly, time pressure becomes another issue. The pressure of interpreting data under strict time constraints is also a serious concern. And then lastly, the workflow-oriented issue like overloading of information through data-EHR is also a major issue.
While experts have been avoiding EGRs’ effect on clinician burnout, the article proposes several strategies to address those burnout sources. It also includes rendering provider’s clear data types, developing standardized templates, and role assignments for patient information integration. That also incorporates artificial intelligence into the system and eases workflows naturally.
