A University Medical Center of El Paso executive previewed the HIMSS21 session. It will focus on the use of real-time analytics to reduce readmission in hospitals.

Texas has announced its participation in the federal Delivery System Reform Incentive Payment program. The University Medical Center of El Paso, a Texas hospital, has seen an opportunity to improve the outcomes for its Medicaid and low-income patients. Also, their concern centers around the majority of the patient population while protecting the long-term financial viability.

Intending to achieve the DSRIP financial incentives, UMC has launched its ambitious improvement efforts. It is targeting the 32 quality metrics. It also focuses on preventing avoidable readmissions. The error-prone and time-consuming data analysis have been replaced with the advanced platform of analytics.

The platform is providing real-time data on the performance series at the department. Also, it is assessing how the program team has access to the comprehensive view of the performance. It identifies the care gaps or issues in the process. It collaborates with the changes in workflow. At the same time, it applies the data-based evidence for the interventions in the system, which improves the outcomes.

He also puts focus on how the data analytics platform is focusing on the areas which are having the design for the interventions and impacting the performance metrics. He also talks about how he and his team are fostering an interdepartmental culture for learning and improvements.

UMC is using many of the strategies over the last 10 years to reduce its readmissions. The strategies are allowing them to tie the quality outcomes under the DSRIP. UMC is averaging $30 million of new monies per year through the Texas DSRIP.

These innovations and strategies are also focusing on the culture of learning and improvement with the team. It is putting priority on the design and the impact while leaning on the sigma techniques.
