Telehealth enables critical care for newborns during the time of the pandemic

As the United Kingdom went into lockdown, the babies kept getting birth and have been needing care. Here tele-neonatology came to help.

As the COVID-19 pandemic started sweeping across the United Kingdom in March 2020, the government quickly imposed a lockdown. But even though society ground to a halt, one thing was still constant. Babies kept being born, and they also needed care for the initial period. However, the critical care for newborns through telehealth is easing the situation.

In Liverpool, the restriction caused a sudden drop in the availability of neonatologists. The discussions also began reading the transferring of the neonatal surgical service to the other countries. The neonatal service would not have survived without telemedicine.

Dewhurst will present at HIMSS21 with Beth Kreofsky, the operation manager of the Tele Neonatology Program at the Mayo Clinic. He has also explained how moving to telemedicine has allowed his team to maintain continuous clinical service. However, the service continued in the Liverpool Women’s Hospital and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Between these two locations, Liverpool is working as the largest neonatal ICU in the UK.

The tele-neonatology solution for the city has ensured that they can continue to provide very safe and quality care to babies. The Dewhurst team has also turned to Intouch Health to continue the care. It is simple to use and leads to an early uptake by the patients.

This change took place quickly. The program has been designed, coordinated, and used within two weeks. Dewhurst also said that he hopes HIMSS21 session attendees will learn how easily they can set up a system.

Time is not at all a barrier here for setting up the telemedicine service. However, when it comes to measuring success, Dewhurst said the team has registered for many good signs.

They are having financial benefits, patient and clinician satisfaction with positive user feedback. The speed of the reviews and the communication ability have been quickly facilitated with the specialists from other hospitals. The team has shown that with passion the commitment, they can set up a whole tele-neonatology program safely and quickly.
