German Trias i Pujol, a pioneering hospital serving nearly 1 million people in northern Barcelona, Spain, has launched an initiative backed by Masimo technology that combines telehealth and remote patient management to improve therapy outcomes.
The initiative, launched on Monday under Masimo’s SESHAT project, will leverage advanced wearables technology and wireless connection to allow clinicians to remotely monitor patients’ data near-real-time from where they are— whether at home or in any part of the hospital.
Launched in the fourth quarter of 2023, the SESHAT project is expected to continue for at least three years. It aims to integrate up to 1,000 Masimo W1® medical watches, 10 Patient SafetyNet™ Systems, 100 Radius VSM™ Wearable Continuous Vital Signs Monitors, and some additional Masimo Hospital Automation™ products into patient management systems.
According to Joe Kiani, Founder and CEO of Masimo, improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs has been the company’s main mission since its founding 35 years ago. With decades of research and innovations, the Masimo now focuses on extending noninvasive monitoring to new areas and applications, including homes.
Transforming Care from Reactive to Proactive Model
Using advanced wearable, remote, and tetherless devices, such as Masimo W1 and Radius VSM, the company focuses on delivering continuous and precise remote patient monitoring technologies that can help clinicians monitor their patients’ health almost instantly in the hospital and at home.
With Masimo’s AI-powered tools, predictive algorithms Halo™ (not yet approved by FDA), automation, and connectivity solutions, patient monitoring can be accurate and precise. It delivers a rich stream of patients’ physiological data for clinicians when and where needed. This makes patients feel more connected and attended to while empowering clinicians with reliable data, informing insightful decisions in patient care.
According to Dr. Oriol Estrada, director of healthcare strategy and innovation at Spain’s Germans Trias I Pujol Hospital, Project SESHAT aims to transform the healthcare model from reactive to predictive, leveraging continuous and real-time patient-derived data measured through advanced wearable technology.
Unlike the reactive healthcare model, in which medical practitioners treat diseases based on their symptoms, a proactive model allows healthcare teams to receive insightful information based on patients’ data. This enables them to predict complications or choose a more suitable treatment pathway based on the patient’s profile to ensure the best therapeutic outcome.
The SESHAT project will act as a validation field for Masimo’s technology, allowing the tech company to improve its tech-powered products while helping the two entities identify new needs based on real-life experiences.
