Traveling abroad comes with its share of challenges, especially when one becomes sick during the journey. The language barrier and geographical location differences could greatly impact one’s convenience in accessing healthcare, making the situation even more concerning.

Since insurance companies may not be able to cover their costs while abroad, and finding a hospital with healthcare professionals speaking their native languages may almost not be guaranteed, many people find themselves in unfamiliar healthcare facilities resulting in high healthcare costs and stress.

However, these challenges could soon be left for history as technological innovations make healthcare more accessible regardless of where the patient’s location is.

A health technology startup, Air Doctor, is working to ensure that travelers abroad can still access high-quality healthcare provided in a language they understand within their preferred health plans.

Co-founded in 2016 by Jenny Cohen Derfler, Yegor Kurbachev, and Efrat Sagi-Ofir, the company’s platform aims to make access to affordable healthcare effortless for those traveling abroad.

Extensive Directory for Travellers to Find Doctors of Their Choice

The company’s platform combines a directory, data-driven location-specific service providers, and accounting technology, enabling travelers to access quality healthcare from their preferred specialists from around the world.

Air Doctor’s directory features a list of vetted doctors from diverse locations worldwide with their profiles detailing what services they offer and the languages they speak, allowing their customers to choose in-person or online consultations.

Additionally, patients don’t have to pay the doctors directly or have their claims offset by insurance companies. Instead, the platform matches the patient’s insurance policy with the services offered and handles the reimbursement payments to the doctors.  However, it charges a commission and service fee for the process.

Air Doctor recently secured a $20M series B funding round to expand its services to more customers globally. The company currently has 20,000 doctors from 84 countries under its directory and boasts over 80,000 users after signing agreements with 18 leading insurance firms.
