New algorithm introduced to identify kidney diseases by Columbia University

The newer algorithm can detect kidney diseases that can save a person and will also help physicians.

The past decade has encountered several people being a victim of kidney diseases after their 40s. Columbia University developed an algorithm that can detect early-stage chronic kidney disease in a person.

And after detection of the same, it gets reported to the physicians. With the newer algorithm, creates an Electronic Health Report based on the blood and urine results. Dr. Krzysztof Kiryluk stated, “Identifying kidney disease early is of paramount importance because we have treatments that can slow disease progression before the damage becomes irreversible,”

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey has proved several things. Like one in seven adults presumed to have kidney diseases, but they aren’t aware. Detecting kidney problems in the first stage will help in curing before it gets any worse.

Asymptomatic patients are not much required to run through the necessary test as suggested by the clinicians. That necessary test includes several challenging tasks. Like measuring kidney-filtered metabolite in blood and measuring the leakage of protein in the urine.

“Many patient characteristics, including age, sex, body mass, or nutritional status, need to be considered, and this is frequently underappreciated by primary care physicians,” said Kiryluk.

The algorithm published in Digital Magazine has found out 95% of patients diagnosed with nephrologist-identified kidney disease. With the newer algorithm, both the patient and the physicians will gain awareness of the disease.

Moreover, for complication management, it will suggest stage-specific recommendations. The researcher’s team is also well optimistic about the algorithm.

It can overcome significant real-world issues of the EHR data. This algorithm is best to detect chronic kidney diseases, which lead to several health issues and even death. And despite several complication and issues in the kidneys, the health system hasn’t quite upgraded in this field. Thus, this algorithm holds the potential to upgrade the system which can saves lives.
