Researchers in China have developed an AI model that can accurately diagnose pediatric eye disorders in children by analyzing smartphone images.

As reported by CBS News, the AI model was trained using over 1400 facial images taken from over 500 children. Based on the images it was trained on, the model can accurately detect three common eye defects:

  1. – Myopia, or nearsightedness
  2. – Strabismus, or “crossed eyes”
  3. – Ptosis, or drooping of the upper eyelid

With the model still under development, the researchers are optimistic that the AI technology could allow parents to photograph their children using smartphones and take their images for screening, paving the way for early treatment and other medical interventions, which could help prevent blindness.

The Impact of Eye Disorder

Vision loss is one of the life-altering conditions that not a single parent would want their children to end up with when there are ways to prevent it. According to the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness, the magnitude of vision loss in children and adolescents is startling.

At least 450 million children globally live with an eye illness that requires treatment, with 90 million others experiencing some form of sight loss.

While there are many types of vision problems, astigmatism, farsightedness, and nearsightedness are the most common pediatric eye problems affecting children and adolescents. By detecting the conditions early enough, the patients can receive treatments, as well as other medical interventions to help avert a severe case that could even result in sight loss.
