Samsung has acquired AI medical technology startup, Sonio to advance its presence in the healthcare sector and accelerate growth in the use of Ultrasound technology in global maternal care.

The startup, which automates ultrasound reporting to help clinicians make well-informed interpretations, was cleared last year by the FDA to be used by healthcare professionals for prenatal imaging.

Founded in 2020, Sonio focuses on simplifying the work of healthcare professionals through automated ultrasound, making the process seamless for both the doctor and the client. The startup’s CEO, Cécile Brosset, emphasizes the platform helps achieve high accuracy, speed, and efficiency.

Advanced AI-powered Prenatal Ultrasound System

The platform analyses the images received from a sonographer, processes them in the cloud, and provides clinical practitioners with analysis for better decision-making. This helps obstetrics and gynecologists perform pre-natal examinations adhering to the highest quality standards and ensuring the completeness of the medical examinations.

Sonio also has clinical decision support features that help streamline workflow and prioritize any potential rare diagnoses. Currently, the platform claims to identify over 300 potential prenatal anomalies and syndromes with over 90% accuracy.

The technology works reliably for every maternal patient regardless of their body mass index (BMI), age, and ethnicity.

Major customers of the Sonio AI-powered software include hospitals, women’s health groups, and private physicians. The software is also used in many medical settings across the United States. Pediatrics, a medical group, is one of the organizations using Sonio’s software to improve workflow and patient outcomes.

The acquisition of Sonio is part of Samsung’s greater strategy to establish a strong foothold in healthcare. The platform will leverage the company’s advanced AI expertise and Samsung Medison’s cutting-edge ultrasound system to accelerate innovations and improve patient outcomes.

Despite the acquisition, Sonio will still operate and grow independently, with its headquarters in France, and continue developing innovative products compatible with other ultrasound device makers.
