NUHS describes the importance of holographic tech for brain surgery

The healthcare group of NUHS has started exploring its use of mixed-reality tech for clinical care.

The National University Health System in Singapore has started its research and development for holographic tech. It is working to explore the use of mixed reality tech for clinical care.

In evidence of concept demonstration, they have used a holographic visor to create a 3D hologram. It has demonstrated the brain scan of patients, which they have projected during surgery.

They have generated the hologram with the help of a 3D medical software named Virtual Surgery Intelligence.

The MR technology enables surgeons to know about the tumors quite quickly and easily. It helps to know the exact location of the tumor and lets you know about the suitable angle for incision. Surgeons can also view the holographic image from various angles. Also, they can interact with better control with its gesture and speech recognition.

NUHS has already completed its first phase of research. Through this program, they wanted to support the next generation’s clinical application development. It would benefit patient safety and will enhance both undergraduate and postgraduate education.

The MR headset can replace the bulky operation theatre equipment. It will also reduce exposure to radiation during the procedure.

The use cases of holographic solutions include live streaming of data from the image acquisition machines. Also, it includes the use of AI and ML for better image processing with predictive analysis.

NUHS has outlined a holo-medicine roadmap. It includes near and longer-term research projects. It improves the integration with the existing system in the hospital. At the same time improves the infrastructure support in the hospital system. It hopes to implement holographic technology in all hospitals and healthcare sectors in the coming future.

NUHS will conduct clinical validation studies before the adoption of MR solutions as the primary clinical method. This system needs registration with governing bodies to work efficiently.

The US has already seen the application of MR technology in healthcare. OU Health surgeons have used an MR Device safely to conduct complex reconstructions. The system is using AI to visualize the 3D CT scan data during surgery.

Virtual reality technology also helps to train medical students. It is preparing the surgeons before performing an operation.
