New York-based medical device startup AI Optics has unveiled a new AI-powered handheld medical device featuring advanced imaging technology to provide instant retinal screening for eye disorders.

Known as Sentinel, the new retinal screening device aims to improve access to eye health screening by making it easily portable and usable anywhere. It addresses the caveats of the traditional eye screening methods, which are prone to inconveniences, geographical barriers, and high costs.

Founded in 2020 by Luke Moretti, AI optics aims to provide an affordable retinal screening device that is simple and cost-effective for eye health screening in any setting, regardless of geographic location.

Application of AI-powered Retinal Scan Technology

The company leverages deep learning and infrared photorefraction for retinal diagnostics. Using this technology, AI Optics aims to build medical devices that prevent blindness and vision loss and enable healthcare professionals to take retinal scans with precision.

According to AI optics, primary care providers can use retinal eye scans during routine visits. They allow them to conduct precise scans and receive results within 2 minutes, enhancing the diagnostic accuracy of common retinal disorders such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, which often causes blindness.

AI Optics’ retinal scanning approach leveraging advanced diagnostic technology can help in the early detection of common eye disorders known to cause blindness. This can enable doctors to provide early treatments, improving patient experience and therapy outcomes.

The company plans to deploy the innovative AI-powered medical device in primary care and extend its use to at-home healthcare providers, opticians, and retail clinics.
