Researchers put across the role of AI-powered scheduling to reduce burnout. It also came up to the surface during the Anesthesiology Business Event. The Anesthesiology Department at Ochsner Health adopted the new AI scheduling system.
They also recorded an average score of 60 anesthesiologists from 3.3 to 4.2 out of 5. It is the greatest achievement for the Ochsner Health System.
They implemented the AI schedule in 2018. At that time, they held the vision to increase control and flexibility. Also, the adoption of AI-powered scheduling enabled a better work-life balance for physicians. It reduces burnout.
Physicians were able to attend events important in their life. The earlier scheduling system was on the excel spreadsheet. It also enables the physicians to take one or two vacations after day-off requests.
At the same time, AI-powered scheduling tools featured flexibility. They can better predict and lead to increased vacation days. It also reduced the ungranted vacation days and established a better work-life balance.
Dhruv Choudhary, the lead author of the study at Ochsner Health, also explained, “While the staff-created schedule took 60 hours to 75 hours per month, the AI system generates the schedule over a 14-hour period and generates an unlimited number of combinations to deliver the best schedule option for the department.
AI-powered scheduling increased engagement scores. The score surged within half a year. The better working conditions were the main reason. The organization and clinicians’ relationship improved as well. The team enjoyed the benefit of the AI-powered tools during the pandemic.
The system allocated physicians shifts. It better handled the staff by not straining the physicians. Physicians were able to choose ICU work or operating room work. It relieved them from major anxiety.
With brimming patients, the physicians were able to better manage the patients. The engagement score continues to be stable.
AI proved beneficial for patients and healthcare providers. The individual was also able to receive many appointments on the same day. However, it optimized the schedule to cater to the services.
